?

Do you prefer the new 1.9 combat updates or the old 1.8 mechanics?

  1. I prefer the old 1.8 mechanics

    41.4%
  2. I prefer the new 1.9+ mechanics

    37.9%
  3. I don't know

    12.6%
  4. I don't care

    8.0%
  1. Yes there should be timing in all arenas as you can only get used to one way or the other.

    Is that a bug?

  3. The new mechanics are annoying, but the correct way to go. The annoyance is due to the learning curve for those of us who grew up on spam click fighting.

It certainly helps to switch to 1.9+ across the board, as then you learn the new techniques and don't have to "think" about it.

1.9 pvp is terrible. The new mechanics now make pvp require no skill.

As opposed to clicking repeatedly? Can you elaborate?

    yeah.
In 1.9 pvp you just wait forever and in just ends up being the person who gets the first hit. In 1.8 pvp sneak attacks and combos require tons of skill. Now its just a seesaw of back and forth hitting requiring no skill at all.

  7. No, the new mechanics reward timing and poise. The old mechanics rewarded a fast mouse button.

I like 1.8.9... As said before I just think that 1.9+ is terrible I agree with RMicky I think it also takes skill with a bow and not everyone can click really fast!

I have no idea why everyone's whining about there being "No skill" in 1.9+.

I would like a elaborate post telling me why a more even playing field (More even because: Many 'Weaker' and Armorless players seem to be happy/indifferent towards the update, saying it's more fair and they have better chances of winning.) and why 1.8 has plenty of 'Strategies'.

I will edit this post later.

Okay, here goes... Please keep in mind that everything I say below is my own personal opinion and does not reflect any changes that may or may not be made to The Sandlot.

Minecraft is huge. It's the second highest selling video game of all time (Tetris is #1). To many kids (or adults!), Minecraft has shaped and defined their childhood (or adulthood!), and in some cases, helped them figure out what kind of person they are or want to be. Basically, Minecraft is a million different things to millions of players. Obviously, Mojang has their work cut out for them any time they make any change to the game. There will always be players who don't like something. It's usually a vocal minority that cry out whenever a change is made that they don't like, and Mojang is typically very responsive to feedback about their game. They don't always change their minds based on feedback from the community, but they at least acknowledge it. They still develop and function like an indie game studio even though their player base has over 100 million players. On one hand, that's really cool. On the other, it makes the game progress at a snails pace compared to other large AAA games.

Most of the time, their changes are good. They're fun additions to the game that don't interfere with other game mechanics. If you don't like these changes, they can safely be completely ignored and it will not change your own, personal gameplay or hinder how you play Minecraft (for the most part). Some examples:
    • Ocean Monuments
    • Horse Armor
    • Nether wart blocks
    • Bone blocks
    • Llamas/Polar Bears
    • Spawn eggs for all mob variants
    • Elytra/End cities
    • Slime Blocks
And then sometimes, they make changes that simply cannot be ignored, and make a core gameplay change. Most of the time, people do not argue about the stuff I listed above, but they argue about this stuff. Some examples:
    • Combat cooldowns (the biggie we are discussing here)
    • Entity collision
    • Weapon damage
    • Sword blocking removed, sword primary attack changed to a swing
    • Food regeneration/saturation
    • Enchanting (requiring Lapis, drastically nerfed enchantments per item)
    • Anvil repair (no longer incentivized to combine items)
    • Mending (makes diamonds basically obsolete)
Many of the changes listed above are grievances that have affected me personally, and affected how I play Minecraft at its core. If you guys have known me for a while, you know that I have absolutely hated the new enchantment and anvil systems added in Minecraft 1.8. I still hate them, but I have no choice--I just have to live with them now. I tried to fight the changes by voicing my opinions publicly, but when you are the vocal minority you have typically already lost the battle. Mojang listens, but they don't always act.

The 1.9 Combat Update is on a completely different level from any other update to Minecraft. It has caused a rift in the community at large, as well as here on The Sandlot (the votes are split almost 50/50 in this poll). When I hear that, it seems really obvious to me that Mojang messed up. Nearly all of the large PvP servers that I won't mention here are still using 1.8.8. Why do you think that is? Because if they updated to 1.10.2 or 1.11, half of their player base would disappear. Now I don't think that will happen here because we have lots of other things to offer besides PvP, but for a lot of these other servers, that's all they have. Even the PvP tournament at Minecon was hosted on 1.8.8, and 1.10 had been out for 4 months by then!

So obviously PvP has a split community and there's no real way to fix it now. If they revert the changes, the players who liked the new stuff will feel deceived after rallying for the changes, and the players who liked the old way will hold grudges against everyone that liked the update (They reverted the changes! I told you it was terrible!). It's a lose/lose situation. On top of all that, Dinnerbone is the one that made all these updates, and he's not even working on Minecraft anymore! I think he had to step away from the game because of all the hate he was getting online.

If you think PvP was "boring" in 1.8, then you didn't have a strong repertoire at your disposal. I'm not saying I did either, because I was awful at PvP, but there is a lot more than fast clicking going on. There's enchantments, quick block placement, fishing rod combos, snowballs and lava/water traps, TNT cannons, ender pearl saves and sneak attacks, and the list goes on.

So what about PvE then? Are the combat changes good for PvE c0w? Well no, they aren't. Why do skeletons need to be exponentially harder to kill, when a majority of Minecraft's player base is little kids? I kid you not, skeletons are nearly impossible to kill now unless you have a shield. I find that absurd. Go try to make a wither skeleton battle arena and tell me how that new sword swing works out with zombie pigmen everywhere. You can't even butcher pigs and other animals easily now unless you jump attack with your sword or use an axe. Tell me what purpose entity collision serves, other than to grief players by pushing them into lava or off a cliff. Entity collision completely ruined my iron farm on Skyblock for no good reason.

At the end of the day, none of what I say matters, because it's Mojang's game and they are free to change it however they like. Either you conform to their grand plan or you stop playing, and it makes me really disappointed that those are our only two options.

Im not sure if you know of it but there is a really reliable plugin that reverts pvp back to 1.8 but keeps the 1.9+ cosmetic items such as llamas.

I play here because i like the arena servers. Ive had my fair share of the others but realisticly i pretty much play 90% of my time in arenas And about this time now its about 95%. 1.9 has ruined minecraft for me. Not completely but ive lost my faith in minecraft as a whole. I used to love hg and it was my favorite game ever to play here on sandlot. It got updated to 1.8 and the bugs ruined it and then it got to 1.9 and ruined it as well. I dont really play hg anymore because of 2 reasons
    1. 1.9
    2. other people who hate 1.9 arent playing so ussually theres not enough people for 1.9.

I love 1.8 pvp but 1.7 was even better. I really hate the new 1.9 pvp. But as c0w said we cant do much about it. The new players to the game wont care about it because its all they know.

I used to think that adding a new server for 1.9 pvp would work but when i think about it Sandlot is not a big server and arenas have gone down anyway. Arenas would not flourish if it was split in half.

This is my message to c0w though:
Your not gonna be able to satisfy everyone in this situation. Your gonna have to make a decision of who your gonna keep happy on this server. I probably wont play on Sandlot anymore if arenas stays 1.9. You do what you think is best for the sandlot and i will respect your decision no matter what. Im just saying this is mojang's fault not yours and do what you think is best for your server.

Yeah, Mojang basically split the community and messed up really bad with the combat update and there is no going back. Jeb said they might still revert the combat changes, but it's been too long for them to actually do that now. We just have to live with the changes.

I respect your decision. If you aren't having fun here, then there isn't really a reason to keep playing. I am hoping that after a while, everyone will get used to the changes and will develop new strategies and find that they are as proficient in combat as they were pre-1.9, but that could take a really long time.

    nefarious_neo Tiny, but fierce!

I'm not even sure how hard this would be, but it's definitely worth mentioning.

On another server, there is the 1.8 version of PvP and the 1.9 version of PvP. Since Arenas and HG is the biggest controversy here, maybe there could be two separate Arenas/Hunger Games. They could look EXACTLY the same but just be different versions.

  15. It probably wouldn't work people would probably refuse to play one or the other equaling less mini games and smaller mini games.

Er..... I have a reason..... I was sub-par at 1.8 PvP, but I am terrible at 1.9+ PvP (Very compelling reason right?).

I used to think that would work too but if you think about it thats a pretty big server probably and sandlot istn exactly a big server. I mean when i play arenas i see about a range of 80 different people total in like the last 3 months and splitting it up in half would basically destroy arenas entirely

I started playing SVS today, and I have to say that I LOVE the new fighting mechanics. Even a fight with a skeleton feels like an actual battle. (I actually got killed by one while getting used to new mechanics.) It felt like an actual enemy rather than just an annoyance.

I'm mixed on this subject. I like the idea of having shields, and I have no idea why they weren't implemented before. It would seem logical to have a shield if there is weaponry. I also like having a two usable hands, and it can be used in combat by having right hand sword and left hand bow/shield. However, the cooldown is annoying, and makes me prefer 1.8 combat. People (Like Me) are just used to clicking, and the whole cooldown thing is too complicated for a game like Minecraft. Minecraft is not a realistic fighting game, and it shouldn't try to be one, as [I believe] it's attempt to was a failure.
