Ok I think the problem is the lag maybe you were just having really bad lag and it would not allow you to pick up the Items.

Sorry, but lag is pretty common in SVS, if you're having too much trouble, I suggest going to another world for a bit, and then coming back when you think it may be better for you. That's what I usually do!

if you have windows (any version. must be 64 bit) this will work. so open the launcher, click "edit profile" then click "JVM Arguments" and in the far left of the text box, you will see something that says "-Xmx1G"
what you will need to do next, is change the 1 to a 16. this should improve lag. if you have windows (any version) 32 bit, this will not work.

number 2: (this requires optifine.) so, get on a singeplayer or multiplayer world/server, and press "esc" now click "options" and then, click "animations" (the animations button should appear if you have Optifine installed) and then at the bottom left, you will see the two buttons "All ON" and "All OFF." click "All OFF" and that should clear some lag.

Changing the 1 gig of ram to 16 gigs won't help anything, it might actually slow down Minecraft. You should probably only allocate 3 gigs of ram at a max. (-Xmx3G)

You'd also need to have 32 GBs of ram to allocate 16, and not very many computers have that much(unless they are custom built)
