The short answer is that you can't. But if you are on a lot, always helpful and kind you may eventually be asked. It is rare. There is further discussion deeper in forum archives but that is its essence. See you online!

A tad off-topic here, but I like how it says there in the Helper section, 'or if you just need someone to talk with.' It shows that Helper is more than just assisting players with issues in-game, and that makes me glad. Helpers are definitely there if you need someone to chat with, whether it be for fun or if you're going through something tough.
@jeofry becoming a helper is what a lot of people want to do. A new batch of 28 helpers was just added, so we have to wait awhile till new ones are added, too. The helpers we have have showed their excellence time and time again, and players waiting to be helper may or may not get the chance. There are hundreds of people who play Sandlot, and if everyone was a helper, it wouldn't be as special. I'm not saying that you'll never be a helper, I'm just saying that it will be extremely hard to do so.
@jeofry and anyone else interested in being a helper.... You can start the process simply by being available to your fellow players. I would like to echo what @SnoopyBanna said, about just talking to someone. At times I have asked helpers simply to talk to a player for a bit. I do this when I see a player say in chat: "I'm so... bored, lonely, angry, sad, frustrated, etc." Anyone can do this! If you see a player having a tough day, reach out to him/her. Ask what is wrong, or offer to do something with them. Sometimes just a few minutes of concern from another human can turn a player's whole outlook around. Also, as @KristKaT said, you can be helpful in many ways on The Sandlot. Sometimes players send a private message to get help from mods because nobody answers them in chat. Other times, I make alerts for helpers to go assist a specific player. Usually I do this when I am already helping one player, and get another pm or see another player say in chat: "How do I... claim, change something/add someone to my plot, etc." And, at other times, I will reply to a pm by telling the player to ask the question in open chat. Anyone can do this too! When players ask questions in chat, take time to answer if you know. Or direct them to someone else who probably knows the answer. **If I send an alert for a helper to see someone about griefing, then the responder has to be a helper. They have tools to investigate griefing.** Otherwise, please do take time to help our fellow players. Some long-time Sandlot players may be new to your favorite server, and may need help learning the commands and procedures. You can be just the right person to get them started!
