There is also a CHANCE that a player could circumvent the chat filter on sandlot and spam curse words on the server exposing our players to things they shouldnt see, but we dont just ban all chat because of this.

The Sandlot server is heavily moderated, and while as far as I'm aware you can't delete a message, the mods will sort it out ASAP. If you post a picture with your house and your street name in it, not only do these people now know your street name, they also know what your house looks like, and possibly the general area too. Also, if the 'Share Real Life Pictures Here' thread was still accessible, they'd know what you looked like.
While yes, it would be very bad if that was to happen, I'm not talking about children seeing curse words. Yes, it's bad, but it's not a 'safety concern' as such.

you can delete any message at anytime,

You could also accidently say your school name or address or your full name in chat as well. Anything you could possibly say on forums could be expressed in game chat, yet we dont ban in game chat

    nefarious_neo Tiny, but fierce!

It’s easy for someone to see the name of a school in chat and remember it if they’re a bad individual. They would instantly know where the kid goes to school. Forums it lasts longer, sure, but your point is that we should ban anything that causes ANY risk so it’s impossible to have any harm done, but that would require banning all chat too, even if it’s a LITTLE less likely to be as big of a deal in Minecraft chat. Also keep in mind more people are actually online rather than checking every thread, so the risk really isn’t that different. More people pay attention to chat rather than all 30 active threads that moderators happen to pay more attention to.

I was aware of this feature on forums, but what about in-game?

We seem to be going round in circles. As I said, the Sandlot server is heavily moderated. It is a lot quicker and easier to sort out chat than it is to sort out a picture the mods may not be aware of. It is also very hard to 'accidentally' say your school name, address, or your full name, I assume what you mean by that is younger players not realising the risk, which is always a possibility, but my point is we should minimise the risk as much as much as possible. It is much more likely that a child or a teenager would accidentally post a picture with something that identifies them in some way (Schoolwork with the name of the school, a school bus, their home address on a letter, etc, etc) than it would be for someone to say their full name and address in chat, unless it is a young child, but then you would hope their parents had at least given them some internet safety lessons.

    Hey everyone,

As the most senior staff member on The Sandlot, I would like to weigh in - this has been a very interesting discussion.

Some of you have brought up the history of The Sandlot. In the past, we were generally more lenient on things like this. This is something that I greatly enjoyed about The Sandlot. As the server evolved, external media references in particular have been something that has increasingly been controlled. I understand your frustrations on the approach on this, because I share most of your grievances. I see The Sandlot as a safe place for all ages to play. I agree with points from each side regarding this matter; below is my personal opinion and suggestions for each based off of LifeLearner’s post:

    1. Personal photos

The real-life family pictures thread is/was likely the most beloved thread on our forums. In accordance with COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) law, you had to be at least 13 to post, or you needed parental permission. (this is the same for our whitelisting process) I can recall few (not none, because it does happen) incidents where there was an issue. These incidents were promptly corrected/removed by the Moderator team and/or player for safety reasons. No, you cannot tell for sure if parental consent has been given, but hypothetically we could restrict it to that you cannot upload a photo of yourself unless you are 13 years old. Moderators can verify this information.

As for pets/art/etc., I do not think that should have been lumped with the banning of IRL photos of people. I like @RMicky 's idea of having singular threads for each of these artistic mediums and pinning them to the top. All of you are aware that you can report any rule-breaking content to Moderators at any time. Of course, as mentioned by multiple individuals, you have to watch out for signatures, names, street addresses, landmarks, stores, bystanders, schools/churches, etc. as a safety precaution.

I do not look at the forums as another social media outlet like Twitter. I agree with a lot of what @SupersonicE9 said; The Sandlot is a private community that you must be approved to access. The whitelisting process is very thorough for this reason.

    2. YouTube channels and videos

I agree with the banning of YouTube channels – that is something we cannot moderate and with the addition of the community tab on channels, it has become more of a risk than the usual comments section. I disagree with the videos aspect, as outlined in point #3.

    3. Acceptable videos

I agree that the primary videos posted should be Minecraft SP or The Sandlot gameplay. However, it sounds like this excludes a lot of different artforms. Music, funny appropriate videos, stop motions, speed paints/art, etc.

In my opinion, I would prefer to look at the ability to only post specific videos instead of channels, as I feel that can be moderated much easier. YouTube has become the new TV – I would like to look at the possibility of only posting acceptable, individual YouTube videos. It’s (YouTube) the easiest way to upload video content to our forums (or anywhere on the Internet), much like how Imgur is used to link pictures.
    ----------------------------------------------------------
In my opinion, I think the posting of pictures and individual videos brings us closer together as a community, and allows players to share their talents and passions outside of Minecraft in a safe environment.

As Moderators, of course, I would expect that we would be respectful to all players opinions, as they have been to ours. We have been very fortunate to have an understanding community over the many years we have been in operation. Thanks all for your feedback – I really appreciate hearing honest opinions on the changes we make. Please respond if you have feedback on my post – let’s discuss.

I agree with all of this. This is very reasonable. I did not mention from the start that I did think banning YT channels was a good thing, it was the other parts that I felt that were being taken to the extreme. Thank you for your thoughtful insight.

Yes, the mod squad is listening. @c0wg0d makes the final decisions. It is of course easier to fully hear opinions that are stated respectfully (as most of these are).

I of course tried to get c0wg0d to shut down this entire website so we could just play Minecraft, but ah well, security will never be perfect :)

I agree with you hams, it’s just a really sudden change for everybody.

I mean, after years of watching players grow and flourish, I still don’t understand why action is just now being taken. Like I said, the real family photos I can understand (to a point), but the art, pets, etc. really just does not make sense. This is how we grow closer as a community, this is a good place to receive feedback and get constructive criticism.

I have not & probably will not ever think of The Sandlot forums as a ‘real’ social media - you have to apply to have access to forums and our server, which you don’t have to do for other social media sites.

I love Sandlot, I always have; but it’s starting to feel closed off and more restrictive.

We’re all only human. It’s a lot of trial and error here & that’s OK. We’re learning as we go, I’m thankful we have mods who will listen to our feedback and take it into consideration.

I like the ideas of having different forums - or having people help more on forums. :)

I'm a bit late to the party, but my opinion is, the moderators know best. They aren't just here to decide to do things for random reasons, they're here to keep everyone who plays on the sandlot safe. Even if that means restricting something that people liked having.

    Anyways that's just my opinion!

I'm pretty sure the policy means you can't post anymore pictures of your artwork, but I would wait for clarification from a mod before you delete the thread.

The mods and c0wg0d are digesting all your comments and thinking things over. No promises on changes but give everyone a bit of time. Until then, please stick with the new rules. Right now you can't post art either, but if I had to guess I'd say that's the one most likely to be allowed if we make any changes.

I want to thank everyone for your thoughtful posts by the way. I know I had not thought of things from the perspectives some of you talked about, so it helped me understand why you disagreed with some or all of the new changes. Many of you did a great job of expressing yourselves in a positive way. Full disclosure: I believe I was the mod who first suggested just completely shutting the real life pictures thread down in response to some concerns that were brought up.

I don't know if the new rules will change but I hope that whatever @c0wg0d (influenced by all of us) ultimately decides, you will know that we have all been listening to you and given due consideration to what you've said. And I hope whatever decisions are made that ultimately you will respect them as being the best choice we thought we could make for the Sandlot overall. This is not some random, capricious whim. Life tried to state some of the reasons, but there are always others as well. c0wg0d makes the ultimate decision because he owns the server and therefore is ultimately responsible for doing the best thing both for the server and for him personally, so please respect his decision and understand that there are reasons.

I do say I have to agree with most of Cher's response though I can understand the art since some art may not be friendly or become to personal but I am confused on what the issue is with pet photos.

The pet photos could contain a an address and/or a street so a innocent pic could tell us that Juliette_Marie123456 lives on 586 Sandlot drive. It could have a mirror with someone’s face. That’s just my opinion that might not be the case.

    cheezypotatoes00 Scalloping away!

This server means a lot to me and I don’t really know how to express the way I feel about everyone on here especially in these times. And I didn’t even know about the thread for posting pictures and I feel like the rules are a little too strict cause just recently I wanted to post a picture of my pet bird Billy and my other bird Buddy. Another thing I want to say is I feel like it’s great for players to see each other irl even if it’s just through a photo and it really would help me since I’m a introvert and it’s great being able to do what we normally don’t do (socializing) thru a game and having fun with other people as a person that not to long ago was allowed to play stuff online and grew up (and still is growing up) playing games with cpus not knowing what it was like doing things with other people online

A little side note the things a said may not make sense but I felt like I needed to say something here and another reason it may not make sense is because at this time I’m still only 10 so...idk what else I should put
