    Hello everyone,

The Sandlot now supports Minecraft 1.16.4 clients. Under the hood, all 1.16 servers are still running 1.16.3, but that shouldn't be a big deal, because no new server-side/gameplay features were added in this latest version.

The main new feature added to Minecraft 1.16.4 is a new Social Interactions Screen. We need to talk about this, and what it means for the moderator team, our helpers, and the community as a whole.

The new Social Interactions Screen can be opened, by default, by pressing the P key. This new screen will show a list of all players currently on The Sandlot, though only in the server you are currently in.

Note: On The Sandot, this list will show 80+ players, many having a ~BTLP prefix. These are "fake" players that are required to format our tab list in the way it is.

The main purpose of the new Social Interactions Screen is to mute or block players. While I could see this being useful on a large Minecraft server, I do not think it serves any benefit on The Sandlot. We are an inclusive community, and do not want anyone to feel left out. This feature could also cause unintended side effects, like bug reports being created that indicate a player cannot hear someone in chat, or a player not being able to hear important messages from a moderator. On top of all that, it doesn't actually work on The Sandlot! Even if you mute a player, you will still see their chat. This is because we do not use the vanilla Minecraft chat system. I do not consider this to be a bug, and I will not make any attempts to "fix" the ability for anyone to mute another player.

If you explore this screen further, you might notice under the "Blocked" tab, there is a message that states you can "Manage with Microsoft account."

If you have not yet heard the news, Mojang is soon going to require that every Minecraft: Java Edition player will need to migrate to a Microsoft account. This is not yet finalized, and specific details may change, but here is what we know, and what it means for you, or for our younger players, your parent.

    1. You (or your parent if you are under 13) will have to create a new Microsoft account, or use an existing one, and migrate your Minecraft: Java Edition of the game to it.

    2. You can create a Microsoft account using any email address--it does not have to be one provided specifically by a Microsoft service.

    3. If you have multiple copies of Minecraft: Java Edition purchased, you will need a separate Microsoft account for each one.

    4. You will be required to create an Xbox profile, and select an Xbox gamertag during the migration process. This Xbox gamertag will NOT be used in Minecraft: Java Edition, and your current Minecraft name will stay the same. It is still against the rules to share Xbox gamertags on The Sandlot, and if you do so, you will be banned.

    5. Parental controls will be added to Minecraft: Java Edition to block multiplayer servers, and to block Minecraft Realms invites. We do not have full details on this yet (such as whether it is opt-in or opt-out), but if it is opt-in, then it's possible you will not be able to connect to The Sandlot after migrating your account until this option is allowed. This is a very important thing for parents to pay attention to, and hopefully we will get more info about this feature closer to the migration date.

    6. The official Minecraft launcher will notify you when it is your turn to migrate your account. They currently expect the migration to begin in early 2021.

    7. All current Minecraft: Java Edition players are going to get a free cape after their account is migrated.

If you have any other questions, let me know and I will do my best to answer them. Thank you.

Good stuff to know- I agree with your decisions regarding this new feature and I’m glad that it already doesn’t work with sandlot chat so you don’t have to do any extra work

    thanks c0w!

I was curious about this. Glad to see that blocking won't be a thing in the Sandlot.

I'm afraid I don't understand this one. What if you don't have an Xbox and use a laptop instead?

And you don’t need an Xbox to have one, you will just use it to login

So we'll have to create two profiles to play on Minecraft- a Microsoft one and an Xbox one?

Nonono, sorry I should have combined my two responses in one comment

My current confusion is just that c0w said we'll need to get a Microsoft profile, and an Xbox profile is also required. So are both going to be required to play Minecraft?

Your Xbox profile is part of your Microsoft account, so yes, you will have to create a Microsoft account (if you don't have one already), and then also create an Xbox profile, while logged in to your Microsoft account. The Xbox profile will not be used for Minecraft: Java Edition, but it would be used if you played Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, or Minecraft: Dungeons, for example. You can create an Xbox profile on any computer, and it does not require owning an Xbox to do so.

So you don't need to get the Xbox profile if you only use java edition?

Yes, they are requiring everyone to make one, even if it's not used.

It's good that the Social Interaction menu doesn't work on The Sandlot as it could be abused to ignore moderators messages, which could cause many issues

So, will Tab still work to see all of the players online? Or is it just P now? Thanks for posting this, c0w! :)

Wow, this is going to be really annoying. I currently own 6 Minecraft accounts and I'm going to have to make a Microsoft and Xbox account for each one? This sounds ridiculous in my opinion.

    Why do you have six-

It’s mainly for security reasons but yeah if you have multiple accounts it will prob be a little hassle
