Remember this is not the Microsoft of old and cross platform communication is part of the new structure (Office for Android, multiple iWatch apps from day 1). C++ is what they used to program the Hololens version as well so it is no doubt the future of Minecraft. it will be interesting to see how they open up modding and what kind of sdks they release in the process. Certainly not an easy transition from java but only because there are so many mods but make no mistake, Microsoft is already adding incentive to those not yet playing but wanting Minecraft with the $10 deal on the beta of the Windows 10 version and has never been shy to lease slow adopters in the dust by putting old versions to the graveyard.

I tested Windows 10 for some time and was stable enough to be excited about the release, but make no mistake about the forced updates and issues that will arise which is to say not if but when.

I missed out on the developers opportunity for hololens but will be purchasing one the second it is available.

  3. Actually, Kyukuro, there have been statements from Mojang and Microsoft confirming the acceleration of a drive to parity with the C++ and Java versions of Minecraft. The speculation has been on the part of many parties as to why they wish to do this. The C++ version allows the use of touch screens, where the Java version does not, so the natural assumption is that, in the long run, the C++ version will be the preferred version.

To clarify my team comment (which referenced ME instead of Vista, shows how old I am), Microsoft has become famous for it's good version/bad version progress of Windows. The theory is that the A team worked on Windows 10, 7, XP and 98...the B team did 8, Vista, ME/2000 and 95.

For a bonus, I have used the following operating systems on computers I or my family have owned...compare your list:

    CP/M, DOS 4, DOS 5, DR-DOS 5, DOS 6, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 98, Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.1.

My favorite, WfW 3.11...simple, robust and kept me from having to use Windows 95! However, CP/M was a much better OS than DOS, if you ask me...and DOS underlies Windows.

Extra bonus, anyone else ever own a Hercules Graphics Adaptor?

@c0wg0d im kinda confused... Is it like an update to minecraft or just another version like the PE version and the xbox version? Because im wondering how this will effect my computer and my minecraft due to the fact that I have No Idea what this means

  8. lji23, that's one of the more interesting things. It's also why this whole thing will take a while. As it currently stands, Mac's and Linux machines will be potentially out in the cold...but as Microsoft is a competitor to those machines, would that be a surprise. In the end, how will this be addressed, who knows?

This is a 'standalone' version. It's separate from the original PC version.
    Yes, It is optional.

    Err...just some questions....

If mods/plugins run on Java, and if Microsoft is discontinuing Java for Minecraft, does that mean that the mods and plugins that use Java won't work anymore, and that the mod or plugin owner will have to change the code to C+++ before it can work again? Or will they just not work at all?

From what I've seen in this thread, apparently Mac/Linux will not work for Minecraft, and people will have to switch to Windows. Am I right?

No. This is a standalone version. However, Like stated earlier in this thread, There is a chance they may change it round and decide to run Minecraft on C++. There is nothing to say that this will definitely happen, But it may be the route Microsoft/Mojang take.

I bet if Microsoft discontinued the Mac version, they would loose like a third of their players...

So Kyu, you think that we can update to windows 10 and keep playing MC with Java through regular/existing launcher? I would like to upgrade to 10 but wait and see with the C++ version until functionality and stability are tested.
Am I understanding this option correctly?

Yes, to the best of my knowledge, I believe that is possible.

Mojang tweeted out saying they will not abbandon Macs and Linux.

  19. And there you have it, an immediate backlash causes Microsoft to back up and cover up its mess.

    In summary:

Windows 10 Minecraft Beta (W10MCB) is a C++ version of Minecraft that is developing from the PE and XBox version of Minecraft.

Downloading W10MCB will not impact your Minecraft (Classic/Java).

Not downloading W10MCB will eventually cost you at least $10 to download at a later date. The time limit on this isn't clear.

C++ is less mod friendly (at the current date) and less Mac/Linux friendly (at the current date). As I understand it, C++ can be run on Macs and Linux boxes, but not as pure native application (meaning there are performance hits) and potentially requiring specific (read as not too cheap) programs.

I would also say Microsoft would really hurt the value of Minecraft if they don't find a way to run M10MCB on Macs and Linux in the long run, just as not making it easier to mod would cause similar value losses.

BOTTOM LINE: Impact on Sandlot, at this time, zero. Keep calm, and mine on!
