The Sandlot - A Family-Friendly Minecraft Community

If you or someone you know has tried to sign up recently for The Sandlot, you may also know that there was a problem that prevented one from being able to complete the registration.

We were using Google's "reCAPTCHA" (a backronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart") interface to prove that the person signing up was not a robot. This is to prevent robots, or automated software, from being able to create hundreds or thousands of registrations and flood the forums with spam. Google discontinued their "v1" of the software, which caused this portion of the registration to fail. I have updated it to use their new "v2" which is a lot "smarter" and should only require you to check a checkbox saying you aren't a robot when registering. Sometimes it may show a series of pictures and ask you to select ones that match a given criteria, like people or signs or cars.

Mojang is not hosting a large and eloaborate Minecon in a convention center this year. Instead, there will be smaller but no less official viewing parties of the livestream all across North America, as well as one (at the time of this writing) in London. The events at Microsoft Stores are free, and appear to be set up as first come, first served. The first 50 people in line will get priority seating. They may be allowing more than 50 people inside, but you will at least be able to meet other...

The Sandlot has been updated to support the latest Minecraft client, 1.12.2. You must now use this version to connect to and play on The Sandlot.

The servers themselves may not be on that version (for example, there are no parrots on Easy) but that is the version you must use in your launcher.

I'm probably going to have to do many server restarts, and I will need everyone's help to test things out and find bugs. I am guessing the maintenance and testing will take a couple of hours. I hope you can join me!

If all goes well, I will probably try and update some other servers too.

This maintenance period may last an hour or more. I am going to try to add support for Minecraft 1.12.1 and update several plugins across all servers.

If you live in the United States (or southern Canada!), this Monday, August 21, is going to be a very special day! We are going to have the opportunity to see a solar eclipse from anywhere in the US!

I am making this post for two reasons.

1. I want you to be safe while viewing the eclipse.
2. I want you to learn something amazing about our incredible solar system!

"What do you mean, be safe?" Just because the sun is blocked out by the moon for a while, it is not safe to look at! You can damage your eyes permanently if you try to look at it without proper protection. This does NOT mean you can use sunglasses. You must use certified protective eyewear. Most large cities should have a place you can go to buy glasses suitable for looking directly at the sun without damaging your eyes. I got a pair for $4 at a local telescope shop.
